Understanding Age-Related Skin Changes

Rough bumps, red dots, brown raised lesions… you may be wondering what these skin common skin lesions are!ย

As we age, these skin imperfections appear gradually with time, sun exposure, or hormonal shifts. While most are being skin lesions, distinguishing between a benign and cancersous means potentially requiring further assessment.ย

At Glow Cosmetique, we frequently support clients seeking clarity about changes in their skin and the most common skin lesions they may develop. From seborrhoeic keratoses to cherry angiomas, skin tags, and more โ€” these common growths are part of the natural ageing process and are often seen in clients over the age of 30โ€“40.

This blog is designed to help you understand common skin lesions you may have, types of skin spots, benign skin growths, age-related skin conditions and understand when to seek further assessment. We want you to understand when we can treat so you can feel more confident in caring for your skin. Each section offers a breakdown of what the lesion typically looks like, who it affects, and what we may do during a professional consultation.

Note: This blog post is for educational purposes by our educated team at Glow, however this information does not replace medical diagnosis by a doctor. If you are unsure about any change to your skin, please book a consultation with a qualified health practitioner.

Skin - Lesions How To Treat Them

What Are The Most Common Skin Lesions?

Benign skin growths are common as we progress through the years. Below are a list of the most common skin lesions we see at Glow. For a comprehensive analysis, book in for a skin lesion assessment with our skin trained nurses and therapists at Glow Cosmetique.ย

Cherry Angiomas (Cherry Spots or Red Dots)

Cherry angiomas are harmless little red, vascular growths that become more common with age. Some facts about cherry spots:

  • Often appear after age 30
  • Dome shaped or flat
  • Can occur anywhere on the body

Seborrhoeic Keratosis

These appear as waxy, raised lesions on the skin often appearing on the back, chest, scalp and face. Seborrhoeic Keatoses appear as:

  • Brown, tan or black in appearance
  • Present as rough or “stuck on”
  • Common later in life (after 50)

Skin Tags

Skin tags are soft, small skin growths that hang off the skin by a small stalk. Skin tags present as:

  • Linked to friction, weight gain or hormonal changes
  • Painless or benign
  • Can be removed, easily and safely
  • Found around the groin, neck, armpits and chest

Moles

These are often brown or black (darker and look like freckles at times). Important things to mention about moles:

  • May be flat or raised
  • They can be present from childhood or develop over time
  • Can change with excessive sun exposure or hormonal shifts
  • Monitor these spots for colours, shape or border changes – and get assessed!

Sun Spots or Liver Spots (Lentigines)

These are considered sun spots (freckles) and can change with sun exposure. More information about sun spots:

  • Commonly found on the hands, shoulders or arms (most exposed areas to sun)
  • Harmless but may resemble melanoma – always get skin checks yearly to monitorย
  • More common in older adults or on certain skin types (fair skin)

Who Is At Risk of Skin Lesions and Growths?

Most skin lesions are a risk factor for those heading into their 40s and over. Unfortunately, it is mainly a genetic factor because of your skin type. Those with a family history of seborrhoeic keratosis, moles or vascular lesions will most likely see these changes happen after 30 years old.

How to Remove Skin Lesions and Growths

  • Clinical Treatments: Our treatments at Glow Cosmetique specialise in creating beautifully smooth skin and helping to clear common skin lesions. These treatments are only considered cleared or safe to do so if a skin check has been completed by a doctor.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy diet, limiting sun exposure and staying hydrated can help reduce the risk of developing some of the skin lesions mentioned (skin tags, sun spots/moles and seborrhoeic keratoses.
